Pilates

Let’s talk Pilates!

In Pilates, movements are created and enforced through awareness of the mind & body.  We are taught how to stabilize the spine and shoulders while supporting our lower back without compromising our form.  We learn how to strengthen from the deep stabilizer muscles to the large mobilizing muscles, which creates a well-balanced workout.  Pilates programs are developed to not “over-work” our muscles.  By this we gain strength without building "bulk" or stressing joints.  We teach our muscles to work together as a whole while moving fluidly with greater ease and range of motion.  Despite its slow and careful movements, Pilates is not easy.  I've gained a whole new perspective on exercise since I discovered Pilates, and never have I looked back!

Why Pilates?

Because it enables all ages and stages. It’s not just a series of controlled movements performed on the mat. There are numerous machines and props designed for Pilates workouts. Here are 10 reasons to take on this commitment!

(1)Get to know your body…

Every Pilates exercise has a specific goal and several elements to keep in mind such as targeted muscles, coordination, balance, mobility, sequencing, etc. You will experience movements and discover muscles you may not have known existed.  I refer to Pilates as “The Discovery Channel” or “putting the pieces of the puzzle together” because each day you will learn something new about your movements and how much your body is capable of doing!

(2)To increase core strength and (3)enhance torso stabilization…

In Pilates, you learn how to initiate an exercise from those internal muscles that are highly neglected.  Building core strength helps you become more stable from ankle joints to neck.  It’s not about how many repetitions we can accomplish or how much resistance we have, it’s about serving the purpose of the exercise and performing it safely and correctly!

(4)Sharpen the mind…

Pilates requires a lot of thinking – expect to think – without that it’s impossible to focus. You have to keep track of multiple things while moving multiple limbs.  To get true results the movement has to be executed properly (based on the 5 basic principles in Pilates) Maintaining activity in the brain is just as important, if not more, as physical activity.  If we function physically in response to our thoughts … If we are mindful of our movements - it’s a win/win situation!

(5)To prevent injury and (6)decrease back ache…

As we age, our bodies change.  We strive to be physically fit but we don’t want to be in pain to do so.  Pilates is low impact on the joints and enables you to perform movements smoothly.  No pain, all gain!

(7)Recovering from an injury or surgery/post-rehabilitation...

After being treated and released from Physical Therapy for example, Pilates is the answer to help you become more functional on the fitness side.  A personalized recovery exercise program is designed to prevent further injuries.  One of the beauties of Pilates is knowing that every exercise can be modified and simplified, while still enabling you to gain the same results!

(8)To improve posture…

We always notice good posture when we see it!  What we do for a living, especially, can have a huge impact on our type of posture i.e. sitting at a desk all day answering phones, standing at a computer slouched over and fidgeting with the mouse, frequent travel in a car or plane, etc. Pilates emphasizes stretching and promoting more exercise in the spine. The exercises will help you strengthen those neglected postural alignment muscles and help you to stand taller and leaner.  Will you actually grow taller? -- maybe! I did!

(9)Improve athletic and sports performance...

In Pilates, our emphasis is on strengthening the muscles that are lengthened or less flexible and stretching those that appear to be stronger.  These strategies are combined with breathing pattern and body awareness.  Pilates can help athletes to achieve a higher level in their game!

(10)To become a better you!!!
